The Internet has become the Archimedean point in our daily life. Almost nothing gets done without it nowadays. The more we rely on it, the more it seems impossible to live without it. It is undoubtedly the most reliable machine Man has ever made. However, could this blind dependence of ours in itself be a threat to mankind? Are we investing too much in this new medium that we are risking to lose too much if we ever were to live without it? Could something good come out of it?
1. The power of expression:
While the internet has played a major role in the empowering of our generation, there have been a few downsides to it as well. Not too many of these people have opinions that form a good impression on the generations of the future. Because of this, ideas such as racism, honor based crimes, religion based crimes etc. are being propagated via platforms like Facebook into the future generations very profusely. The lack of internet would perhaps curb this.
2. Personal growth:
The growth of smartphones, as a result of the internet has made people completely disconnected from actual human interaction. If the internet were to stop working someday, people would revert back to doing productive things in their free time- new hobbies, dedicating time to their children and families etc. We can all agree that would be a good thing.
3. Growing up:
There was a time when children in school loved going out to play, love sports and have an affinity towards art. Today, we see kids and teenagers who live their whole lives posting statues on Facebook, updating their Instagram and posting Snaps all day. A life without the internet could bring back the good old days.
Let’s face it; the ability to socialize physically is dying. None of us feel the need to interact with people on a day to day basis just because we have WhatsApp and Messenger and every other app to talk to people who aren’t even involved in our lives. Taking the internet away from us would no doubt give us the need to interact with real, live human beings.
Though the internet is a boon and mankind would not be at the stage where it is without it, there are so many negatives to it that it is turning into a menace. Though it’s unlikely that such a time will come to live without the internet, it is an interesting scenario to imagine.
