Twitter’s Journey Over The Years

It was on March 21, 2006 that Jack Dorsey made his first tweet on “twittr”. What followed later revolutionized the way our digital world communicates with each other in 140 words. From “Obama’s second term” and “Je Suis Charlie” to live tweets on Osama Bin Laden raid Twitter has become the voice of the people, a 24/7 micro-blogging/news platform.

There are lot of people who read their Twitter feeds rather than newspapers to get a daily dose of information. It is also a brilliant platform to market products, to get the word out. Twitter has brought the fans and celebs closer than ever.

Keeping its benefits in mind, here’s how Twitter has evolved in the last 10 years:

1. It Was An SMS Aimed Product:

It was initially launched to help users stay in touch with their friends. Twitter’s UI looked a lot like Orkut. Don’t you think? Its homepage was also pretty simple and used green as its primary colour.

2. It Popularized Hashtags:

Integrating hashtags was never a plan for the Twitter management. The outbreak happened when former Google designer Chris Messina tweeted with one hashtag in 2007, and since then, tweeting without hashtags is next to impossible!

3. Retweets Are More Popular:

How many times do you actually write and tweet? Hardly, right? But if you go and see your timeline, you will find that most of the activity is because you retweeted way too much. Hey, but RTs are more popular than sharing on Facebook!
