How often do you see a teenager bag sixth international gold medal in her career before even turning 18? However, defying all odds and creating history has always been an often sight in India. Amongst the numerous names that help the country hold her chin up and feel proud, a small girl from Assam just added her name to this long list of veterans by bagging the 5th international Gold medal of her sprinting career! Hima Das, a sprinter from the village of Dhing in Assam’s Nagaon district recently clinched her fifth gold medal and also became the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in a track event at the IAAF World U20 Championships. Out of the six gold medals, she clinched four of them over a period of just 15 days and left the entire world awestruck and Indians proud. Here is everything you need to know about Hima Das:

1. Early Life :

The youngest child out of her 4 siblings, Hima was born on 9th January 2000 in Assam. She was a keen football player and played as a striker for local clubs. She always wanted to be a footballer and was pretty good at the sport. Das passed her grade 12 exam from Assam Higher Secondary Education Council in May 2019.

2. She didn’t have access to any sporting gear until 2 years ago :

The Golden Girl of India, Hima Das was completely oblivious of the essential sports gear and it is only 2 years ago that she put on her first spiked shoe. This illustrates and justifies her rapid growth and learning that has taken her from the fields of Assam to winning 56 gold medals.

3. Her performance has always seen an accelerating growth :

Since the time Hima Das was introduced to the open field, it is since then that she took a flight and never looked back. Her interest and determination was evident since childhood as she used to run around the muddy field of her school like a bullet where other students used to play football on the same ground. Her consistency made her qualified for the Championship in Guwahati just after a few months of training. The athlete ran a 100 meter race, giving tough competition to her counterparts and ended the game by achieving a Bronze.

4. The Inspiring Coaches :

Das had exponential potential which was brought to notice by her coaches Nabajit Malakar and Nipon Das. They convinced her parents for her to stay in Guwahati and continue her training which would transform her into a global athlete.

5. The Federation Cup Gold Performance :

Her stupendous performance which involved her running for 400 m, was covered by Hima Das in 51.97 seconds that surpassed the 52 seconds limits set by the Federation to qualify for Commonwealth games.

She broke her own previous record by covering the 400m track in 51.30 seconds and acquired the sixth position.
