The Rio Olympics have been filled with epic moments- from great upsets, to records being broken and also the greatest athletes showing us how many leagues apart they are. Some truly memorable moments from the Rio Olympics were:
1. Fiji Take Down Great Britain In Rugby:
Rugby was invented in Great Britain in the late 19th century. They pride themselves with being the best in the world. However, the Olympics team from Fiji had a different opinion on this. Coming into the finals, no one really believed Fiji had even a whisker of a chance. But that’s not how the game turned out to be. Fiji came into the match in full spirit, played with extraordinary spirit and crushed Great Britain 43-7.
2. Joseph Schooling Triumphs Over Childhood Hero:
Can you imagine how ecstatic we would feel if we got the opportunity to meet our childhood idols or heroes? Well, Joseph Schooling did that and one better. He grew up idolizing swimming legend Michael Phelps. This year, Schooling beat Phelps to win the gold in the 100m butterfly to win the gold. We can only imagine what an amazing feeling that would be.
3. Epic Victory For Bahamas Over The U.S.A.
Shaunae Miller of the Bahamas somehow managed to win a dramatic gold medal in the women’s 400m final – by diving over the line. Miller stumbled in the final stages and then lunged forward as she headed towards the track, edging out American world champion Allyson Felix to win in 49.44 seconds.
4. When Humanity Prevailed Over Self-interest:
The true Olympic spirit shone out when New Zealand’s Nikki Hamblin and Abbey D’Agostino of the USA helped each other out after colliding in their heat of the women’s 5000m. D’Agostino had a serious knee injury in the incident but both runners insisted on completing their race. They were both handed places in the final but the injury prevented the American from taking part.
5. Brazil’s Redemption:
Brazil exorcised the demons of their 7-1 defeat by Germany in the Football World Cup semi-final in Belo Horizonte in 2014 by beating them in a penalty shoot-out to win the Olympic gold medal. The match had finished 1-1 after extra-time and star striker Neymar, who missed the World Cup humiliation because of injury, scored during normal time before converting the decisive penalty and bursting into floods of tears.
We hope you got to witness these amazing events from the Rio Olympics. If you didn’t, you should really watch the highlights of the main event!
