Decoding the Fashion Icon: Farhan Akhtar

What does it take to be a fashion icon? If you ask us, carrying off a variety of styles, without ever looking like one is trying too hard and willingness to experiment should top the list. With these two prime factors in mind, it would be safe to zero in on actor-director-singer-composer Farhan Akhtar as a trendsetter and fashion icon among a sea of other Indian male celebrities.

1. Movies and Fashion:

He looks comfortable in his own skin and yet, doesn’t bat an eyelid when it comes to going the extra mile and sporting drastically different looks intermittently. He grew his hair and worked it up to a scruff for Rock On! where he played a rock artist, taming his locks down with multi-coloured headbands in the movie. He mellowed considerably for Karthik Calling Karthik with a well-kept short hair do and then grew it all back to portray a turbaned character in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag but not before playing an intense poet in the popular Zindagi Na Milegi Dubara. While the fact that his wife, Adhuna Akhtar is one of the top hairdressers in the country may have something to do with the confidence he exudes when it comes to experimenting with his locks, we can’t deny the man credit for being up for a change altogether!

2. Love for Style:

In interviews, Farhan is quite vocal about his love for style and all things fashionable. He insists that he’s not brand conscious but does have a soft spot for Prada’s offerings. Among Indian designers, Farhan is known to sport Narendra Kumar Ahmed, Rajesh Pratap Singh and Shahab Durazi creations for public outings. The best part about Farhan’s style statements is that he knows exactly how to dress for the occasion. If it’s a casual film screening, he will not hesitate to turn up in a pair of shorts, leather sandals and a t-shirt with a sling bag thrown over. If it’s a wedding, out comes his velvet sherwani and bandhgalas with pyjamas to match. Formal dinner events see him in sharp suits. Nothing impresses more than a man who is able to segregate his outfits for various occasions.

Farhan was also one of the few men who started to wear colour, even before it caught on as a trend in the country. A magazine photo shoot saw him don rust hued chinos with a yellow tee and a buttoned up blue cardigan. That was not all… the sports shoes that he wore had metallic blue accents and served as the cream on the cake in the entire look. A hat is another accessory that often contributes to his signature look. You heard right! From hats to fedoras, he’s worn ‘em all, sending style gurus into a tizzy. When it comes to showing off his bad boy streak, all he has to do is wear a leather jacket over a white t-shirt, team it with distressed denims and ruffle up his hair to complete the look.

The only thing constant about his look, over the years, perhaps, is that he has barely experimented with his beard styles. But that too shows that the man knows what works for him and what doesn’t. Mostly spotted in a clean shaven look, Farhan lets his hair styles and choice of clothes do all the talking. Multi-talented, confident, easy going, fashion conscious and a great smile — Farhan Akhtar literally has the entire package! While that is reason enough for girls to go gaga over his personality, it also explains why he has slowly and steadily grown to being recognised as a fashion icon among men.
